How My Protagonist Inspired Me to Be More Genuine

Guest Post by Author Bethany Blake

When I first sat down to write the Lucky Paws Petsitting Mysteries, my only goal was to create a world that would make people happy. Make them laugh. A world I’d want to return to, again and again.

To me, amateur sleuth Daphne Templeton is the embodiment of happiness. She has a Ph.D., but she doesn’t feel pressured by the world to use it. (Her mother disagrees.) She’s content to take care of the pets and people around her, in a sometimes ham-handed way. She prefers flea market clothes to high fashion, believes a one-eared Chihuahua with a severe drooling problem deserves a happy ending, and that cheese can cure anything.

Daphne’s reckless and careless, at times, but always with the best intentions. She speaks her
mind, but she’s willing to listen to other opinions and admit when she’s wrong. She doesn’t do
anything to impress other people. She’s a good listener, a good sister, and a good friend.

Writing about Daphne has inspired me to be more genuine. Her character has made me think about the times I do things because I think that’s what the world expects, and the choices I make because they feel right for me and my family.

If you “visit’ the world of Sylvan Creek, I mainly hope you laugh and have fun solving the
mysteries. But I also hope you’re inspired to follow your heart, like Daphne—and if you rescue a lost dog or cat along the way, all the better!
