Reasons to Read Ax to Grind

This book was my first Tonya Kappes novel, y’all! (Is a midwestern girl allowed you use y’all? It just feels so right in this case!) I cannot tell you how quick I jumped at the chance to review this book. I’ve wanted to read Tonya’s work for awhile now and this was fabulous place to jump in.

Ax to Grind is the third book in the Kenni Lowry Mystery Series. And Sheriff Kenni Lowry has more than a couple of problems on her hands. From dead bodies and unconscious witnesses, to election woes, to mixed up feelings for the cute and available down Deputy. And to top it all off, Poppa’s ghost is back, which always means something is up. This book will have you enthralled from beginning to end.

Here are my top reasons to read.

Family First

Kenni’s family provides comic relief throughout the book. Her relationship with her Mama was especially entertaining. I love how everyone in the small town of Cottonwood, Kentucky seems to be in everyone’s business. They will talk about you behind your back, but will defend you like family.

Duke and His Life of Service

Cute and cuddly pets are prevalent in many cozy mystery books, but I love the dimension that Duke, Kenni’s partner and pup provides. He is a faithful companion and friend. He holds his own as both a pal and a member of the police force.

Ghosts In the Family

Poppa (Kenni’s grandfather) is a ghost in this series. The funny thing is that I found myself forgetting he was a ghost at time because he and Kenni have such an endearing relationship. Poppa was always there to help and lend an ear. He is a heartwarming addition to the book.

Bonus Points to Tonya for a FUN website!

Tonya Kappes is very creative. One thing that she did (that I have never seen done before), is she has a website devoted JUST to this series! Visit Cottonwood, Kentucky and “geek out” a little. Meet the characters, get coloring sheets, book club discussion questions, and so much more. This is a wonderful feature and I love that Tonya took the time to make this site.
