Reasons to Read “Body on Baker Street”
A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop?!? Yes, please! This was one of those series that had me hooked at the topic and cover. Body on Baker Street is the second book in the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery series by Vicki Delany. I loved the first book in this series and couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one as well.
Gemma Doyle and her analytical mind once again come in contact with another dead body under suspicious circumstances. When famous author, Renalta Van Markoff is poisoned during a book signing at Gemma’s bookstore, it is up to Gemma to help solve the crime before the wrong person is arrested.
Here are my top reasons to pick up a copy of this book.
Gemma is a lovable “genius” with a lack of social skills.
Gemma is an analytical genius, but she tends to be somewhat clueless about regular life. She can tell you the exact details of how a room was set up, or what items were sold in the bookshop during a given day, but she is shocked when people can’t have a “frank discussion.” She calls it like she sees it, whether it’s thinking that a potential suspect’s boyfriend is using her, or that one of the police officers working the case isn’t doing a good job. These elements make for fun and entertaining scenes when Gemma is totally confused why people get mad at her for sharing her insights.
Sherlock Holmes Fun
What cozy mystery fan doesn’t love a good Sherlock Holmes tie in? This book is full of Holmes references and tidbits that will have you itching to go back and reread some of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classics. The author does a nice job of introducing us to different kids of Holmes fans – and how some of those groups may clash in how they celebrate the famous sleuth.
We Still Haven’t Met Great Uncle Arthur!
Gemma lives with her Great Uncle Arthur, however, we have yet to meet this mysterious and well traveled man in anything other than phone calls. I am excited and look forward to seeing when this character makes an appearance in future books.
It’s No Mystery – This Book is a Keeper
Another enjoyable installment for this series. Vicki Delay has a wonderful way of bringing to life worlds a reader would love to imagine living in. I can’t wait to see what adventures Gemma embarks on next!
