Top 5 Reasons to Read “When the Grits Hit the Fan” (+ a Giveaway)
There are a lot of great books out there competing for our attention. So how can we decide which book to read next? I know I love getting recommendations from friends as to what they’ve recently enjoyed. So I wanted to tell you about a book I recently finished and enjoyed, When the Grits Hit the Fan by Maddie Day.
When the Grits Hit the Fan is the third book in Maddie Day (also known as Edith Maxwell)’s Country Store Mystery Series. The series follows Robbie Jordan to the tiny town of South Lick, Indiana where she opens a country diner named Pans ‘n Pancakes. In this installment, unlikable college professor, Charles Stilton is found murdered and it becomes personal for Robbie. Not only when one of her friend finds her name on the suspect list, but also because of the unnerving things happening at her home that seem to somehow be tired to the murder.
So why should you pick this book up and give it a try? Here are my top five reasons to check it out.
Strong and confident main character.
Robbie is a strong and likable main character. She works hard and is kind to all those around her. She is a protagonist you want to root for.
It will make you want to organize your thoughts in the form of a crossword puzzle.
One unique aspect of Robbie’s character is that she enjoys crossword puzzles. Not only doing them for fun, but at one point of the book she organizes her thoughts in the form of a crossword puzzle. Laying out her main suspects in a grid like form. I thought it added a fun depth to her character and made me want to try the exercise next time I am in need of a brainstorming session.
A nice mix of suspense and action thrown in with the mystery.
Robbie stumbles across hidden areas of her home she did not know existed. Finding, and exploring, these areas along with Robbie creates a fun element of suspense in the book that has you eager to turn the page and find out what happens next.
An organized murder that actually has a motive.
A pet peeve of mine is when the murderer seems to be an afterthought in the story or thrown in out of left field. I like to feel like I have the opportunity to solve the crime right along with the protagonist. This book has a well thought out murder, motive, and storyline that give you the opportunity to work through the crime right along side Robbie.
You’ll be craving some grits when you’re through.
Pans ‘n Pancakes is always serving up all sorts of yummy creations. As a midwestern girl, southern far is not a thing that is normally on my menu, but this book had me craving some grits by the time I hit the last page.
